On October 5, we invited Colonel Manabu Shimamoto, to our class. He lectured \u201cthe military strategy in Egypt\u201d and \u201can ideal defense scenario for Japan\u201d. First of all, he explained the concept of strategy by providing specific examples. Then he talked about various things. As an example, he explained the main source of foreign exchange for Egypt being the passage charge for ships going through the Suez Canal and the revenues from foreign tourists visiting Pyramids and other sightseeing spots. He also mentioned the deployment of Egyptian soldiers as PKO security personnel numbering the fifth in the world. Lastly, he responded to questions raised by students, while pointing out that Egypt still had to deal with the elfare of people, which remained poor in comparison with Japan. In the fifth period, we watched \u201cJustice Course at Tokyo University\u201d by Professor Michel Sandel of Harvard University and discussed the concept of justice, dignity and virtue. We discussed the concept of utilitarianism and the ifferences of utilitarian values as advanced by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Finally, we discussed the implications of \u201caffirmative action.\u201d (Kodatsu)
