During the post-ACUNS visit to Kyoto, ACUNS`s past President, Lise Howard, and new President, Franz Baumann, were invited by Kyoto University of the Arts President Sakiko YOSHIKAWA for a working lunch at a traditional Japanese restaurant. The Former Ambassador to UNESCO and SRSG in Afghanistan, Tadamichi YAMAMOTO, and the Ambassador of Afghanistan in Norway, Youssef GHAFOORZAI, commented on their presentations. The Annual Meeting of the Academic Council of the United Nations was held from June 20 to 22 June 2024, at the United Nations University Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. About 500 scholars and practitioners of the United Nations activities participated in the conference including nearly 300 from abroad and 200 from Japan. Kyoto University of the Arts presented a “Kyogen” performance on the first day. (20/6/2024)
On the opening day of the ACUNS annual meeting held at the United Nations University, Professor Hiroshi SENJU of the Kyoto University of the Arts, who was awarded the Honorary Prize at the Venice Biennale International Exhibition in Italy, presented his representative work, Waterfall. A diverse and global community of nearly 400 individuals, with 300 hailing from overseas, engaged in a robust discussion on global governance and sustainable development, reinvigorating research to bolster multilateral solutions. I was a student of Masataka Kosaka when I was in college, so I have a realism-based way of thinking, and I was involved in diplomacy from that perspective when I was Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, I am sure you know that diplomacy cannot be improved by simply maintaining the status quo or focusing on reality. To borrow a phrase from Mr. Kosaka, “Diplomacy is about attaching the wings of ideals to the politics of reality.” I would like to work together with all of you to achieve this firmly.(2024,23/05)

As the intergovernmental negotiating team is exploring options for UN Security Council reform in New York, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Permanent Representative to the UN, spoke at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo on April 18. In response to a question from Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa, she stated that the US is interested in and actively exploring the possibility of expanding the membership of the UN Security Council, including the permanent membership of Japan, Germany, and India, along with major African and Latin American countries. However, it remains to be seen whether this proposal will be adopted by a two-thirds majority of the General Assembly members and ratified in accordance with the constitutional procedures of two-thirds of the member states of the United Nations, including all five current members of the Security Council. The Japanese government is called upon to exercise strong visionary leadership.

Minister Masahito Moriyama will promote dialogue and cooperation with India in both education and science and technology. India is one of the most important countries in the Global South and the Government of Japan is keen to strengthen relations with India. We also believe that Japan should learn from India, especially since India is advanced in science and technology.
