John Ueki, a third-year student at International Christian University, shared his views on Zhou Enlai’s leadership style. Ueki, who specializes in international relations, discussed the significance of Zhou’s leadership in light of the qualities required of leaders in the modern world.(05/05/2025)

I was deeply impressed by Zhou Enlai’s leadership style of being “firm in principle but flexible in tactics.” His flexibility in exploring alternative paths after failing the entrance exam, and his willingness to learn from society at large beyond the confines of the classroom, resonated with the philosophy of our Hasegawa Yūhiko Peacebuilding Research Society. Based on the ideology of “great harmony and modest prosperity,” his ability to balance a vision of a grand ideal with the pursuit of practical happiness is a quality sought after in modern leaders, and I aim to adopt this as a guiding principle for my own actions.
